Bertha Smith graduated from Swathmore and was the Publisher of the "Kennebunkport Items" during a time when it was unseemly if not odd for a woman to educate herself much less have a career.  She was the founder of the Olympian Club and a neighbor of Annie Peabody Brooks.  In 1917  Bertha married Charles Sherman, a New York Painter who opened a studio in their home on North Street.
